Labor Day: The History and Meaning of the Holiday

A Day to Honor American Workers

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of American workers.

The Origins of Labor Day

Labor Day has its origins in the labor movement of the late 19th century. During this time, workers were often subjected to poor working conditions and low wages. In 1882, the Knights of Labor, a national labor union, organized a parade in New York City to demand better treatment for workers. This parade was the first Labor Day celebration.

In 1894, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a national holiday. Since then, Labor Day has been a day to celebrate the achievements of American workers and to recognize their contributions to the country.
