Earthquake in Japan Triggers Tsunami Warnings

Major Earthquake Shakes Western Japan

A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck western Japan on Monday, triggering tsunami warnings and causing widespread damage. The earthquake struck at 10:22 p.m. local time (01:22 UTC) and was centered in the Sea of Japan, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of the city of Maizuru.

Tsunami Warnings Issued

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) immediately issued tsunami warnings for coastal areas of western Japan, including the prefectures of Shimane, Tottori, Kyoto, and Hyogo. Waves of up to 1 meter (3 feet) were observed in some areas, and residents were urged to evacuate to higher ground.
