DFL State Senator Nicole Mitchell Arrested for Burglary

Becker County Officials Accuse Mitchell of Breaking into Stepmother's Home

Arrest Raises Concerns for Senate Democrats

State Senator Nicole Mitchell, a 47-year-old DFL representative from Woodbury, has been arrested and charged with first-degree burglary by Becker County officials. The arrest occurred on Tuesday, May 17, and comes at a critical time for Senate Democrats, who currently hold a one-seat majority.

According to police reports, Mitchell allegedly broke into her stepmother's home to retrieve her father's ashes. The incident reportedly occurred in 2021, but charges were only filed recently. Mitchell has denied the allegations and has maintained her innocence.

The arrest has raised concerns among Senate Democrats, who are facing a tight race for the majority in the upcoming November elections. Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic has expressed disappointment and said that the party will "review all options" regarding Mitchell's future in the caucus.

Mitchell has served in the Minnesota Senate since 2013 and is known for her progressive views on environmental protection, healthcare, and education. Her supporters have defended her character and urged people to wait for the facts to emerge.

The case is scheduled to go to trial in July 2023. If convicted, Mitchell could face up to 20 years in prison.
